Hazelnut Farming in Oregon

A Family Farm in the Heart of Hazelnut Country

Oregon grows more than 99% of the hazelnuts produced in the United States, and the Willamette Valley is where the industry took root. Rich volcanic soils, wet winters, and warm dry summers create ideal growing conditions for producing hazelnuts with exceptional flavor, texture, and consistency.

At Freddy Guys, our orchards are part of that tradition. Every season, we work alongside the rhythms of the valley — from winter pruning and spring pollination to harvest in the fall — to grow hazelnuts that reflect the land they come from.

Stewards of the Earth

Freddy Guys takes pride in caring for the soil, water, and ecosystem that make the Willamette Valley one of the finest hazelnut-growing regions in the world. We believe thoughtful farming starts with respect for the land — keeping our footprint small, our practices intentional, and honoring the responsibility to leave the land better and healthier for the next generation.

Why Farming Practices Matter

From pruning and orchard maintenance to harvest timing and post-harvest handling, every farming decision influences the final quality of the hazelnut. Careful farming practices help produce the best kernels possible.

At Freddy Guys, we focus on quality at every stage.

Harvest

Unlike many crops that are picked directly from the tree, hazelnuts are typically harvested after they naturally drop to the ground once fully mature.

Once the nuts have dropped, harvesting equipment gathers the crop for cleaning and drying. Proper drying is essential for reducing moisture levels and helping preserve kernel quality
